Want to Get Involved as a Mentor?
CHAMPS is always looking for new mentors to join the program and connect with our youth. However, it is critical that you are able to fully commit yourself before getting involved. CONSISTENCY is one of the most important aspects to mentoring and is a pillar of our program. Below are some general expectations for all mentors.
- Commit to a minimum of 2 SATURDAYS per month for the duration of the school year (September – May)
- Complete CHAMPS Training modules – This includes approximately 6 hours of Virtual and In-Person training to prepare you for working with CHAMPS Mentees
- Complete Background check, Fingerprinting and Mandated Reporter Training as standard procedures for working with youth. If you are concerned about flags on your background check feel free to discuss with CHAMPS staff ahead of time. We recognize that some men have made mistakes in their past, which will not necessarily prevent you from working with our youth
“Youth who had consistent contact with a mentor were less likely to experiment with drugs and alcohol, were more likely to attend school, saw improved academic performance and better parental relationships.”
Looking for other ways to get involved?
Interested in a 1:1 Match?
CHAMPS is partnering with Big Brothers to provide 1:1 matches for students. This is a great option for someone interested in making a personal connection with one student over the course of a year, or if Saturdays do not always fit your schedule. Complete the Mentor Registration form and indicate you are interested in learning more about the CHAMPS BIGs program.
Join us as a Guest Speaker
Can’t commit to the consistency of mentorship, but you want to connect with youth and share your story? We frequently host guest speakers and organize panels of professionals, community members and other special guests to share their wisdom and experiences with our students.
Join us for Community Service
CHAMPS is committed to providing opportunities for our young men to engage in community service. If you would like to join us for active service in the community, or you would like our students to join you at an event, contact us.
